This tool runs a real video encoder (FFmpeg, compiled to WebAssembly) directly in your browser tab. Your video file is never sent anywhere — it's read, compressed, and written back to a downloadable file entirely on your own device. That also means compression speed depends on your device's own CPU, not our servers.
Real, tested limits — not a guess
We tested this in-browser with real large files before publishing any numbers here: files up to around 500MB compressed reliably; a 712MB test file failed with a browser out-of-memory error before compression even started. Your own limit will vary with your device's available memory, so we recommend keeping files under ~500MB rather than promising a hard number we can't guarantee on every device.
Processing time depends mainly on the video's length (how many frames need encoding), not just its file size — a short clip that happens to be a large file compresses quickly, while a several-minute-long video can take a long time, since this is WebAssembly encoding running on your device's CPU, not a datacenter server. The "Smaller" preset processes faster and uses less memory than "Higher Quality."
